What is Coil Alignment? Definition, Use, and Examples

Coil alignment is how precisely the receiving coil inside a phone sits over the transmitting coil inside a wireless charger. Wireless charging works by inductive coupling: current in the charger's flat copper coil creates a changing magnetic field, and that field induces a current in the phone's coil. The coupling is strongest when the two coils share a centre axis and sit close together. Move the phone even 8 to 10 mm off centre and the share of field that reaches the receiver drops sharply, so the charger delivers less power, wastes more of it as heat, or refuses to start at all. Alignment, not advertised wattage, is what most often decides how fast a phone actually charges on a pad.

How it is used

Alignment is the problem every wireless charger design is trying to solve, and there are three common answers. A flat single coil pad relies on the user to place the phone correctly, which is why these pads have a printed circle or a moulded dimple marking the sweet spot. A multi coil pad lays three or more overlapping coils under the surface and switches on whichever one the phone lands over, which widens the usable area at the cost of thickness and price. A magnetic charger sidesteps the problem entirely: a ring of magnets around the transmitter coil snaps to the matching ring in the phone, so alignment is mechanical rather than hopeful. Misalignment converts the lost power into heat in both the charger and the phone rather than making it disappear, which is why a badly placed phone feels warm and charges slowly at the same time. If you drop the phone down without looking, at a bedside or on a busy desk, pay for either a multi coil pad or a magnetic one, because the extra area is the entire value. If you use a case thicker than about 3 mm, or a wallet case with cards, check the charger's stated maximum case thickness before assuming it will work. For a car mount or any surface that moves, magnetic alignment is not a luxury, it is the only arrangement that stays aligned. Common confusion

Coil alignment is not the same as charging wattage, and this is the most common mix up. A charger rated at 15 W delivers 15 W only under good alignment. The same charger with the phone 10 mm off centre may deliver 5 W or less while still describing itself as a 15 W pad, because the rating describes the transmitter's capability, not the coupled result. Alignment is also not the same as MagSafe. Why is my wireless charger slow even though it says 15W?

Almost always alignment or supply. How do I know if my phone is aligned correctly?

The charging indicator appearing is a weak signal, because a badly aligned phone still charges slowly. Better tests are heat and time: a well aligned phone stays close to room temperature and gains a predictable percentage in fifteen minutes. If either is off, slide the phone in small steps and watch which position runs coolest.

Does a phone case affect coil alignment?
