Accounting is one of the few professions where the desk still sees real paper. Ledgers, printed financials, tax forms, GST notices, audit binders. Add the calculator on one side, the keyboard in the middle, the mouse on the right, and you have a desk that needs more flat working space than most setups.

A typical accounting workday looks like:
- 40% spreadsheets (Excel, Tally, Zoho Books) on one or two monitors
- 25% reviewing printed documents (invoices, GST returns, audit schedules)
- 20% calculator work (physical 12-digit calculator, not the on-screen one)
- 10% email and client communication
- 5% video calls

Size: 1200 x 600 mm fits the full accountant layout
For most accountants, 1200 x 600 mm is the right size. It gives:
- Full keyboard runway in the middle

Material: PU leather for the long haul
Accountants spend long hours at the desk during quarter-end, year-end, and tax season (March in India, September for GST returns). The mat needs to handle:
- Calculator rubber feet (most cheap mats imprint after 6 months under a heavy calculator)
- Coffee or chai rings (sealed surface wipes clean, cloth absorbs)
- Long arm rest (cloth feels nice for a week, then mats down)
PU leather (recommended): Sealed surface, wipes clean of chai, calculator feet do not imprint. The accountant default.
Vegan leather (premium): Same advantages with a longer 4 to 5 year life.
Cloth or felt: Acceptable for short-hours juniors. Mats down within 12 months under daily use.

Calculator placement
A 12-digit accountant calculator (Casio MJ-120D, Citizen CT-555N) measures roughly 200 x 150 mm. Place it to the left of the keyboard if you are right-handed, to the right if left-handed. The calculator should sit fully on the mat, not half on the desk surface, so heavy rapid key presses do not scratch the desk underneath.
Paper review zone
Above the keyboard (between keyboard and monitor base) you need at least 200 mm of clear mat depth to lay out an A4 sheet for review. A 1200 x 600 mm mat gives you exactly that. A 900 x 400 mm leaves only 100 to 120 mm and forces you to hold the sheet in hand, which is harder for long review sessions.
Tax season durability
In March (Indian financial year end) and during quarterly GST cycles, accountants put in 60 to 80 hour weeks. The mat sees triple the daily use. A budget cloth or thin PVC mat that survives normal months will visibly age in a single tax season. Mid tier PU leather or premium vegan leather absorb tax-season abuse without showing it.

For a full-time accountant or CA, mid tier 1200 x 600 mm PU leather is the practical sweet spot. Premium vegan leather is worth it if you bill enough hours that ₹2000 extra over five years is irrelevant.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will the calculator damage the mat? PU and vegan leather, no. Cheap PVC and cork, yes (permanent rubber-foot imprints). Cloth, no but it picks up calculator key debris over time.
Can I use a desk mat for printed audit work? Yes. The mat gives a stable, flat base for sheet review and a clean barrier against pen ink on the desk underneath.
1200 x 600 mm or 900 x 400 mm? 1200 x 600 mm if you use a physical calculator and review printed docs. 900 x 400 mm if you are laptop and on-screen calc only.
